Celebrate National Bike Month by biking to work

Simple steps for bicycling to work:

Choose the proper wardrobe. If you wear a skirt you’re just begging to be the next hot You Tube video. Pants with one or both legs rolled up or secured are best. After that, you can’t really go wrong. If you need to change, put knits (they don’t wrinkle!) in your backpack or bag. Yes, you can take this as an excuse to go shopping.

Keep an eye on the weather. If you’re not adventurous, you may wish to get to work some other way when there is a 50% or greater chance of showers. Arriving soggy takes some of the fun out riding to work. On the other hand, if you get to work, a co-worker or family member will give you a lift if a storm surprises you while at work. No offense meteorologists, but bicyclists need a plan B.

Pat yourself on the back. Congratulate yourself for burning calories and stress while not burning anything harmful for the environment. Your budget will benefit, too, provided you didn’t go overboard on my shopping suggestion. But then again, if you bike to work often enough….

When you arrive at our office on your bicycle, you can park your bike in our bicycle rack. Enjoy May Bike Month! Jennifer Moeller

It wasn’t until I moved to Sturgeon Bay that I ever attempted biking to work. The hardest part was starting. And since I have, I wish I would have done so long ago. It doesn’t work every day because of Wisconsin weather and my calendar: court days are not good bike days. It takes a little wardrobe planning (maybe an excuse to go shopping) and some additions to a back pack, but it’s worth it to begin the day refreshed and to end the day with a “de-stressor”. I highly recommend that you try it. You’ll love the environmental, economical and health benefits. I’ll post more entries in the future on this topic for encouragement and possibly amusement.

How was your Juror Appreciation Month? It was in September, but don’t fret if it wasn’t on your calendar; Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Abrahamson only initiated it in 2008. There are no parades to attend, no feasts to prepare, but it’s a reminder of the important right to a jury trial. A right the Chief describes as, “a fundamental component of American and Wisconsin justice systems.”

Most attorneys thank jurors for their service when we are in front of a jury in court. But sometimes jurors report to the court house and don’t even see the inside of the courtroom. Either way, reporting for jury duty is an important part of our court system that serves every citizen in our community in some way. If you fail to report, the court may fine you or find you in contempt. Avoid that trouble and report for jury duty, which is often an interesting experience.

And we really should say thank you more often. So, thank you! Every month should be Juror Appreciation Month, especially if we decide to have a feast to celebrate. – Jennifer A. Moeller
